Discover the charming lakeside town of Taupō, and the adventures along the way that won’t cost a thing. From epic waterfalls to chilled-out hot springs, thing guide will take you on a journey through the best and freest things to do in Taupō.
Venture into the middle of North Island/Te Ika-a-Māui and you’ll come across a beautiful little town sitting by a just-as-beautiful lake. That town is Taupō, and it’s where you can also find just about any adventure you can dream of—especially the kind that’s totally free! Here, you’ll find everything from hot springs to waterfalls, geothermal parks to the lakeside town itself. And, after checking out this guide, you’ll know exactly which ones to punch into the GPS of your Thrifty rental car. Shall we?
Huka Falls
You can’t go to Taupō without checking out Huka Falls, one of New Zealand’s most epic sights (and that’s saying something, given how epic New Zealand is!). It’s about a five minute drive from Taupō, but you’ll probably start hearing the roar of the water even sooner. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by one dramatic waterfall, pumping 220,000 liters of water per second into the rapids below. Safe to say, you’ll never look at a river the same way again! For the best view in the house, take the Lookout Walk, which’ll set you back an easy 10 minutes, but absolutely zero dollars.

Tongariro Domain Playground
In case your kids still haven’t burned themselves out (which may be likely), head to Tongariro Domain Playground to get the job done. This is the largest playground in Taupō, with a great selection of adrenaline-pumping equipment for kids of all ages. There’s also plenty of shade to be found under the big trees, plus picnic tables just near the playground.
Public Art
Around Taupō you’ll find an intriguing collection of public artworks scattered around the town. These celebrate local culture and history, expressed through impressive sculptures, such as Te Ātea. Located on the lakefront, this towering pou (pillar/spear) is intricately carved from a 2,000-year-old Totara tree and is intended as a meeting place for all. Bring the family and experience the story.
Tokaanu Wharf
Right on the southern end of Lake Taupō is where you’ll find Tokaanu Wharf. Back in the 1880s, this wharf was one of the only ways to transport goods along the lake. Today, it’s been fully restored and is a great place for a walk, a fish, or even spotting some ducks, swans and scaup, and if you’re lucky, some fernbirds and dabchicks. It’s a great way to bring out your family’s wild side.

Hot Springs
Ready to relax? Make a beeline towards Spa Thermal Park and take a dip in the geothermal hot springs. While you’re in there, relaxing those muscles from all that walking, take in the incredible view. Afterwards you can relax by the riverside park, let the kids let loose at the play area, or even go for a walk—which brings us to the next stop.
Otumuheke Stream Walk
While you’re at Spa Thermal Park, you can keep the adventure going along the Otumuheke Stream Walk. The track begins at Spa Thermal Park, then follows the stream until it joins New Zealand’s biggest river, Waikato River. Along the way, keep an eye out for warm pools and mini waterfalls to dip yourselves in. It’s a guaranteed hit for the whole family.
Great Lake Pathway (Lion's Walk)
For a stroll or bike ride, the Great Lake Pathway is one of Taupō’s best. In fact, it was voted New Zealand's Favourite Urban Ride in 2017! Starting from the Taupō Boat Harbour, you can follow the track along the shore and catch an incredible view of the snow-capped peaks of Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu. On a bike, it’ll take 1.5 hours, while you’ll spend around 2.5 hours on foot. Either way, it’s an easy track for the whole family—not to mention free.
Toodle-oo, Taupō!
Taupō is a place where connecting with nature won’t cost you. In your Thrifty rental car, the whole family can easily jump from geothermal wonders to epic waterfalls, over to a relaxed walk by the lake, spending zero dollars and getting squillions of memories in return! So, pack your bags, gather the family and set out on an epic escape to the epic yet lesser-known town of Taupō. It’s an experience your family (and wallet) will thank you for!
