If you and the family are looking for a getaway that’s beautiful, affordable and historical, Tauranga might be the place to go. From the past to the present, Māori culture is integral to Tauranga’s identity. Whether you’re by the water, or up a mountain, you’ll find no shortage of ways to see some nature, get some exercise, have some fun and learn some history along the way. All this, and more, without breaking the bank! So, grab the keys to your Thrifty rental car, pull out this guide and let it take you on a historic journey through Tauranga.

The Elms/Te Papa Tauranga

This heritage building and garden marks one of the early points of contact between Māori and Europeans, spanning both amicable and turbulent relations. Take a wander through the grounds, with or without a guided tour, and learn the fascinating story along the way. Entry (at the time of writing) is $20 per adult, and free for children under 18.

Mount Maunganui

Towering 232 metres above a seemingly endless stretch of white sand is Mauao, an extinct volcano that’s sacred to the Māori people and currently owned by the Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Pukenga iwi (tribes). Take the walking track to the top of Mauao (keeping an eye on the educational signs along the way) and be rewarded by the views of the Bay of Plenty below. Once you’re back at the summit, stretch out on the beach, take a dip or even catch a wave. When hunger rolls around, you’ll be in the company of plenty of beachside cafes and restaurants, and if you’re lucky enough to be around on a Friday night, there’s a Gourmet Night Market with farmers’ market stalls, street food and fresh local produce.

Tauranga Art Gallery

At the Tauranga Art Gallery, you can explore an eye-opening collection of contemporary art and traditional artefacts. It’s a great way to learn some history, or even something from the present, through the unique and creative minds of the area, the country, and even the entire world.

Ōtūmoetai Pā Historic Reserve

This Historic Reserve was once the main stronghold of Tauranga Māori, guarded by an estimated 2,000 warriors. Take a walk along the waterfront, read about the history along the way, then grab a spot on the grass to roll out a picnic blanket and snack away until you call it a day.

Tauranga is rich with Māori heritage, and there are many incredible ways to experience it. Whether you’re strolling through nature, interpreting art or taking a guided tour, you’ll learn that Tauranga is beautiful in both its scenery and history. Plus, there’s no need to fork out big bucks! Even when it comes to your rental car, you’ll find great deals year-round at Thrifty.
