McLaren Falls Park
Around 15 minutes from Tauranga is McLaren Falls Park, a massive 190 hectare park with a beautiful lake in the centre. Grab a spot by the water, set up a picnic and watch the world go by. If you stick around after dark, you’ll be joined by the local glowworms, who come out of hiding to put on a show for your family.
Mount Maunganui Summit Walk
Only 10 minutes from town is Mount Maunganui Summit Walk, which comes with a view you’ll have to earn. Climb to the top and take a breather, before your breath gets taken away by the panoramic views of Bay of Plenty. The climb is fairly easy, but don’t worry if it’s too challenging for the whole family—there’s a super-easy base track as well.

Te Puna Quarry Park
What was once a quarry is now a fantastical park, maintained by some very creative local volunteers. Just a short 15 minute drive from Tauranga, Te Puna Quarry Park is home to an impressive collection of native and international plant species. But that’s not where the fun stops! You’ll also come across over 30 quirky outdoor artworks, spanning different styles and sizes. There’s even a waterfall named ‘Te Mimi O Tuanehe', which is 'a man having a pee' in Māori. (Whether you want to tell your kids that, or not, is entirely up to you!)
Karangahake Gorge
For a walk back in time that’ll uncover New Zealand’s gold mining history, take a drive to Karangahake Gorge. It’ll take about an hour to get there, and once you do, you can stretch your legs with a walk along the river, spotting old mining tunnels, buildings and other remnants along the way. There are a variety of tracks on offer here, so pick one that suits the whole family and get ready to get some education with your exercise!
Kaiate Falls
Kaiate Falls/Te Rerekawau Falls is a multi-level waterfall in the middle of a forest reserve. Jump in the car for around 25 minutes, then take one of the tracks that’ll lead you to the top of the waterfall, then back to the base via the many cascades. At the base, you’ll be rewarded with a majestic swimming hole—if the weather calls for it. If not, just sit back and admire it!

Papamoa Hills Regional Park
At Papamoa Hills Regional Park/Te Rae o Papamoa, you’ll get some history with your hike. This place is of great historical significance, including at least seven pā sites (forts) that date back to about 1650 AD. Take the walking track straight from the car park to the summit of the hill, where you’ll get an awesome view of Mauao (Mount Maunganui's volcanic cone), Tauranga Harbour and Whale Island. All this, only a 20 minute drive from Tauranga!
Historic Village, Tauranga
Step into the past, and the present, at the Historic Village in Tauranga. What was once an old village has now been transformed into a vibrant precinct featuring art spaces, cafes, boutique stores, a live music venue and more—all while maintaining the village’s original charm. It’s free to enter, but keep in mind that some sections may have an entry fee. Either way, it’s an eclectic experience everyone can get into. Plus, it’s an easy 7 minute drive or 40 minute walk from town.
