Located inside the international arrival’s terminal of Christchurch Airport. 

Christchurch Airport Car Rental FAQs

The rental car park is located a short walk (50m) from the international terminal building. Please park your rental car in any of the appropriate parks. Keys can be returned to a member of staff or in one of two drop boxes located at the gold kiosk and the airport counter. When returning your rental vehicle please ensure it is refuelled unless you have selected a pre purchase fuel option. If you do not refuel before return and have not pre purchased fuel, refuelling will be charged at the price stated on your rental agreement.

If returning your vehicle outside of business hours simply park in one of the Thrifty car parks and put your key in one of the two drop boxes located at the gold booth and the airport counter.

If you are running late and you won't be able to collect your rental car at the allocated time, it is important to get in touch with the branch you are collecting from so that we can make alternate arrangements. If you have arrived at the branch and it is closed and if you haven't made prior arrangements for an after-hours collection you will need to pick-up your rental car the following day.

Take pictures of the incredible street art in the city. Christchurch has a well-deserved reputation as being the home of street art, so you know you’re in for a treat as you stroll around. If you fancy checking out an art gallery or two, make sure that Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu is on your list, as well as Art Box Gallery, which was founded after the Christchurch earthquake to support local artists. 

If you want to learn a thing or two, be sure to drop by the International Antarctic Centre! Located next to the airport, you can dive into the mystery of the Antarctic and learn all about what makes it so special. Christchurch is one of the five cities in the world that’s known as a ‘gateway to Antarctica’, so you know that you’re in safe hands to learn and discover. 

Once the education is done for the day, take a stroll through the Botanic Gardens and stop for a bite to eat at the Ilex Cafe - the perfect place located in the heart of the gardens!

Once night falls, Christchurch truly comes to life. The city has a thriving local arts scene, and music is well and truly at the centre of this. Dust off your dancing shoes and head to Fat Eddie’s - with delicious food and live music, you’ll have the time of your life.

There is so much to do in the Christchurch region. If you’re up for an adventure, Christchurch is the perfect place to start it. 

Let’s head out to Lake Tekapo and gaze at the picturesque blue glacier lake. It’s truly one of the most vivid blues you will ever see! Hike up to the top of Mt John to watch the most memorable sunset, before settling underneath the stars. Make sure to spend ample time stargazing while you’re here, as it’s one of the best places on earth to do so. You’ll not only see stars, but constellations, galaxies, and planets, too!

If you want a trip under the sea, let’s go to Kaikoura. It’s just a 2.5-hour drive from Christchurch, which makes it the perfect roadie! Kaikoura is known for some incredible wildlife, including its sperm whale population, so you know here is the best place to dig out the wetsuit and dive in! There are plenty of dolphin tours available as well as whale-watching trips - whatever you decide to do will be well worth it.
