Must-Do Activities of Queenstown, New Zealand
Whether you’re outdoorsy or indoorsy, whether you prefer cosy relaxation or an adrenaline hit, we’ve got you covered. In this list, we’ll be taking in the views, going for a bungee jump, savouring local cuisine and vineyard hopping. These are our must-do activities in Queenstown.

Located on the South Island of New Zealand, Queenstown (or Ngāi Tahu in Māori) used to be a spot for hikers, skiers, and general all-natural-granola types. In the last couple of decades, it’s grown past its reputation as a place for next-level scenic beauty and outdoor adventures. The city is now full of experiences for culture lovers and foodies, too. So, whether you’re outdoorsy or indoorsy, whether you prefer cosy relaxation or an adrenaline hit, we’ve got you covered. In this list, we’ll be taking in the views, going for a bungee jump, savouring local cuisine and vineyard hopping. These are our must-do activities in Queenstown.

Take in the Views on The Remarkables
Queenstown is one of those places that makes you wanna whip your phone out and take a photo every 20 seconds. Save your camera roll and go straight to the best view in the city: the viewpoint on The Remarkables.
Drive the cruisey 45 minutes from central Queenstown to The Remarkables ski field, grab a sightseeing pass from the Guest Services desk and take the Shadow Basin chair lift. It’ll be a short trek to the top of the mountain, where you’ll be able to look out over the ski fields, the city of Queenstown, and the Southern Alps.
Sightseeing tours leave at 12:30 and 1:30, so schedule around that. Because you’ll be walking through snow, remember to wear closed-toe shoes. You might just find the winter wonderland is just too hard to resist and end up renting a toboggan.

Bungee Jump Off Kawarau Bridge
Get your pens ready, because you’re about to tick something off your bucket list. The bungee jump off Kawarau Bridge is one of the world’s first bungee jumps, and you can see what inspired the whole idea. Set in between steep rocky cliffs and over the sparkling Kawarau River, the environment is the perfect place to take the plunge.
If you’re not quite as much of an adrenaline junkie, don’t worry. Kawarau Bungy Centre also offers a zip ride over the river, which is still a rush, but without the same stomach-dropping sensation. The Kawarau Bungy Centre is an easy 1.5 hour drive from Queenstown—make sure to cue some serious pump up music on the way. (Pro tip: Before you jump, remember to smile. Your photos and videos will be so much more impressive if you manage to keep a grin on your face.)

Indulge in Local Cuisine at Botswana Butchery
Reward yourself for your adventurous efforts with an indulgent dinner at Queenstown culinary establishment Botswana Butchery. By now you will know that in Queenstown, setting is everything, and this restaurant is no exception. Located in the historic Archer Cottage, with stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and an old-school log fire, it’s a feast for your eyes. The menu is just as sumptuous, with a particular focus on meats, including local game such as deer.
Ask for help pairing your meals with a wine from their 1800+ bottle cellar. And, if you’re a sweet tooth, we’d recommend the Valrhona Double Chocolate Mousse. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.
Of course, if you’re drinking, make sure your blood alcohol level is safe before you get behind the wheel.Stroll the Vineyards in Central Otago
The vineyards of Central Otago are a must-see, and not just for wine-lovers. They’re havens for foodies and for anybody who enjoys a stroll through lush, cared-for gardens (that’s everyone, right?). The region is renowned for their Pinot Noirs, as well as its vibrant, green vistas. Our special recommendation is Cloudy Bay Shed Cellar Door. The property is gorgeous, and you can sit with a Pinot and enjoy some locally-sourced cuisine while chatting and soaking in the view. The drive to Cloudy Bay is about an hour from central Queenstown, but make sure to give yourself a full day (and a designated driver) to explore a few other wineries, too. If you feel like an historical stop over, plan a pit stop in the town of Alexandra, an 1800s gold mining town with a museum for all you history nerds.
So, now that we’ve convinced you that Queenstown is the place to be, it’s time to start planning your trip (and clearing space on your camera roll). Start by booking your Thrifty rental car, so you can whizz through your itinerary in comfort and convenience.
