Headed on a North Island adventure? With so much to do in the country’s capital, we’ve listed the best places to venture in and around Te Whanganui a Tara / Wellington to make the most of a week spent here.
Arts, Culture and History in the City
It’s no surprise that Wellington is one of the most visited destinations in Aotearoa, New Zealand. The city serves as a vibrant hub of culture, arts, and entertainment. Blend that with its natural beauty and historic significance, it’s no wonder Wellington has been dubbed the World’s ‘coolest little capital’. For those interested in ancient and recent history, the best place to learn all about Te Whanganui a Tara is at the National Museum - Te Papa Tongarewa. With more than 20 exhibitions to explore over six floors, a visit here is sure to quench your thirst for knowledge and leave you entertained. Afterwards, it’s time to step out and explore the vibrant city yourself with a walk down Cuba Street. Known as one of the best places to shop and dine in Wellington, a stroll down Cuba Street is a cultural experience in and of itself. Explore new and vintage streetwear fashion at Emporium, browse an extensive collection of records, CDs and DVDs at Wellington’s longest-running independent record store - Slow Boat Records - and have a bite to eat at one of the many eateries. From drinks at an Italian-style wine bar to meals at Asian fusion restaurants - Cuba Street is the perfect place to take your tastebuds on a journey - and don’t forget to try some of that world-famous Wellington coffee!
Underwater Adventures
After some inner-city exploration, it’s time to grab your tramping boots for a walk down to the Red Rocks Coastal Reserve. Opt for a scenic drive in your Thrifty rental car through Happy Valley to get to the reserve or depart on foot from the city centre if you’re seeking a longer trail. A visit to Red Rocks offers sweeping views of the Ōwhiro Bay coastline, plus, there are often fur seals spotted in the area - but be sure to keep your distance if you spot any! Level up your Wellington adventure and explore diverse marine life with a scuba diving or snorkelling session at the Taputeranga Marine Reserve. Head out on a dive trip to discover an underwater world like no other, or, if snorkelling is more your speed, embark on a journey through the Island Bay Snorkel Trail. With Blue Cod, Spiny Red Rock Lobsters and Butterfish spotted on the daily, you’re in for a treat. Prefer tramping trails over diving expeditions? Tour the Te Raekaihau Lookout Loop Walk for uninterrupted views from the Taputeranga Viewpoint and Te Raukawa Moana Lookout. While you’re here, check out the Moai Statue at Lyall Bay which was gifted to Wellington by a former Chilean president.
Scenic Drive through Middle Earth
Calling all Asgardians! It’s no secret that many picturesque settings in the North Island were used as filming locations in The Lord of the Rings movies, so if you’re a LOTR fan, or just want to explore the natural beauty of the area, Wellington is the perfect place to discover locations from the famous movie trilogy. Starting in the city centre, drive to Mount Victoria for panoramic views from the 196 m high peak. Look familiar? You may recognise the forested areas of the mountain as Hobbiton Woods - see if you can spot the iconic Hobbit’s Hideaway. Next up, drive just over 30 minutes North to reach Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River. Nestled between Moonshine and Tōtara Park, this stretch of the river served as the filming location when the Fellowship journeyed the River Anduin to reach Lothlorien in the movies, and just across the river, you’ll find the Gardens of Isengard in Harcourt Park. From here, a further 15-minute drive in your rental car will take you to the filming location of Rivendell in the Kaitoke Regional Park. After a scenic journey through Middle Earth, extend your trip with a drive over the hills to the Wairarapa region. Here, you’ll find the Putangirua Pinnacles - better known as the haunted Paths of the Dead. If you’re not a big The Lord of the Rings fan, not to worry, there’s still plenty to do in the Wairarapa region. Opt for an afternoon of wine tasting at Hamden Estate or Coney Wines cellar doors, and remember to assign a designated driver.
Relaxation by the Bay
When it’s time to unwind in Wellington, head to one of the many coastal beaches for a day on the shore. Oriental Bay boasts stunning views of the harbour and the surrounding hills, Scorching Bay is a popular spot for swimming and paddleboarding, and an escape to Days Bay provides a tranquil getaway from the urban hustle. If you’re in the city on a Sunday, discover local produce at the Harbourside Market and don’t forget to take a ride on the iconic Wellington Cable Car.
From the country to the coast, a week spent in Wellington will leave you urging to come back. Offering visitors, the best blend of arts and culture, scenic beauty and fascinating history, it’s bound to be a holiday for the books.
